The Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and its familiar cross is now known as the Maltese Cross, originated in 1023. That’s when The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem was founded, also known as the Order of Saint John and the Order of Hospitallers.
The Order was founded to provide care for sick, poor or injured pilgrims coming to the Holy Land, with the Hospitaller Knights dedicating their lives to Saint John the Baptist. It was eventually replaced by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which continues to this day.
