A male orangutan’s arms can stretch 7 feet, or 2 meters from fingertip to fingertip, a reach that is longer than his standing height of about 5 feet, or 1.5 meters. When orangutans do stand, their hands nearly touch the ground.

Mother orangutans share a strong bond with their young. Infants stay with their mothers for six or seven years, and female orangutans give birth only once every eight years, the longest of any animal.

Because orangutans spend 90% of their lives in trees, they are particularly threatened by rain forest destruction from logging. Deforestation and other human activities, such as hunting, have placed the orangutan in danger of extinction.
